Rehabilitation
21/10/14
We’ve been using the lounge / dining room for the last few weeks, and now we’re back in the kitchen too. In theory the builders are finishing for good tomorrow!
I’d anticipated a tricky transition from the cramped upstairs-bathroom-mini-kitchen to our spacious new one, and we’re still in a period of adjustment, but it’s already starting to feel like a fantastic addition to our home.

Final stretch
24/09/14
In the last few weeks things have really come together. The wooden floor in the lounge and the kitchen tiles are down.
The windows are in, the electrics are ready, the kitchen cupboards are in and the worktops are due next week.
The back garden has been remodeled and it’s totally transformed.
I’m not getting too excited but there’s a small part of me that is starting to believe that this job might actually finish one day soon…
Lest we forget the maisonette
20/09/14
The renovation is going to end in the next few weeks so I wanted to preserve a memory* of the chaotic quarters we’ve been living in for the last 6 months – effectively an upstairs maisonette over a building site.
It’s a reasonable amount of space for the four of us but what’s made it awkward is not having a proper kitchen. Appliances, utensils, crockery and food have been distributed in various places, including under our bed.
*I’m allowing the sound of hammering. drilling, shouting in Polish and the interminable, repetitive playlist of whatever European-radio-station-it-is-they’ve-had-playing-almost-constantly-since-March to be thankfully forgotten
Let there be skylights

The builders installed the glass skylights today and they look amazing.
Any concerns we had about the amount of light in the kitchen & dining room have vanished.

Blackberrying
05/08/14
After a few sunny weeks Walthamstow Marshes is bristling with berry-laden brambles. We spent a couple of hours getting scratched and stung but it was worth it to see a group of kestrels hunting.
One of the kestrels landed right in front of Lily while she was holding the camera but she was too astounded to get a shot!
