Montreal day 2 and 3

24/04/11

Easter Saturday in Montreal was tipping with rain so we headed to the Biodome, one of the few indoor, child-friendly attractions we could find. It’s a bit like the Eden Project but with animals, housed in the former 1976 Olympic velodrome.

The queue inside was comically long, so I waited while the others queued at the cafe for snacks. It took about an hour to get in but once we did it was quite good.

The animals were mostly birds, fish and small monkeys and they didn’t seem as miserable as those at Toronto zoo. I enjoyed seeing the puffins playing and flying underwater most. I also got very excited about the vintage-looking black & white photo booth which was hidden away beside the basement cloakroom.

We travelled by train which seemed like a good choice – the train was quite new, clean and comfortable, and despite the lack of interesting scenery on the way it was good to get a sense of Toronto’s surroundings.

If you’re excited by a genre collision between hiphop & balkan brass (I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t be!?) then check out this project on Kickstarter. I was excited enough to pledge some cash, and they’re approaching their target:

UPDATE: They made it to their target, yay!

Science Sunday: The mysterious egg

28/03/11

An experiment to float an egg in a glass of water, mysteriously.

Theory

An egg, made to float in the middle of a glass of water, will inspire fascination in a visitor.

Equipment

  • A large glass
  • Water
  • Salt (lots)
  • A fresh egg
  • An easily impressed visitor

Experiment

A large glass was filled halfway with water into which lots of salt was dissolved. A fresh egg was placed in the solution and more salt was added until the egg floated. The glass was topped up with fresh water and the egg indeed floated mysteriously in the middle of the glass, at the junction of the salty and fresh water.

The glass was placed prominently on a shelf until the mother of the scientists returned home from work. The egg was presented to her.

Scientists H & L celebrate another successful experiment

Result

The mother was heard to say “Ooh!” and a look of fascination did indeed briefly pass across her face.

Conclusion

Science is ace!

Remarks

Science Sunday is an occasional event in our kitchen. This experiment came from a great library book called Smart Science Tricks.

Fool if you think it’s over

23/03/11

After a wonderful time in the UK we returned to Toronto thinking that the winter was finally over. What fools we were.

I think Lily had something to do with it – she had been given a potion from Josef with instructions to pour some on the ground and make a wish.

Please consult steps 1 to 4 below to see what happened…

Coincidence or... wizardry?

A typical scene

25/02/11

I’m trying to take Lily skating regularly while the ice rinks are still open, so for the last two wednesdays I’ve left Harry in daycare and taken Lily & her friend Isabel to the one at Dufferin Grove. This is how we get there!
